The Dragon Gate and Koi
About The Dragon Gate and Koi
This immersive experience is inspired by the Dragon Gate, a Chinese fable about a koi fish that swims upstream and over a great waterfall. In exchange for its dedication and perseverance, the gods rewarded the koi by turning it into a golden dragon.
The installation depicts this story by inviting viewers to step into the river. The intended path through the installation puts you right in the middle of the fish making the journey upstream.
We also incorporated decorative and celebratory elements from a variety of Asian cultures across the diaspora because, while the story originates in China, a long journey requiring perseverance is something we can all relate to. Wau bulan, genda mala, and lotus flowers were all chosen specifically for their significance in South Asian cultures.

Wishing Tree
About the Wishing Tree
Wishing trees are trees that have been specifically chosen, for various different reasons, to serve as symbols of one’s deepest hopes and desires. Though the type of tree and the way of wishing vary from culture to culture, the concept is similar; a humble wish on the tree itself. The types of wishes vary, and while some wish for good health, luck, and prosperity, others may wish for requited love.
Make a Wish
1. Grab a wish strip or a piece of string.
2. Think of a wish.
3. Tie it to the Wishing Tree.
